Over the years, I have indeed developed bonds that will last long after the newsroom doors are shut. As editor-in-chief of the Ventura College Press, I have had chances to participate in competitions, win academic awards, go to a barbecue, cover exciting sporting events and interview some unique people.
Although this is the last issue of the VC Press and my final semester as a journalist, I know the writers and photographers from this and previous semesters will continue the tradition and even bring recognition to the college years after the pressroom closes.
This final Soapbox I dedicate to all the hours these students put into each paper that got published. For an eight-page paper, students put in around 40 hours each, giving up their Thursdays until 10 p.m. and most of Friday, too. They balance school, work and a family and still have time to put out an award-winning paper.
I thank all the sports teams for allowing me to cover and follow them as they made their way to championships and tournament finals. I know that a lot of players I interviewed will make it to the next level and one day become professional players. Because of this, I feel sorry for all the sports programs and theater arts programs that won't get the reviews or follow-up of the game coverage and for all the students who will be blind to events occurring on campus.
I end this Soapbox to state that they may stop the Press, but the students who work in the newsroom will carry on with journalism. Meznek cannot really stop the presses; they will continue as journalism students carry on. We will always be proud to say that we were Ventura College Press journalism students.
